Stara Zagora - An important crossroads
Near mountain | Stara Zagora
Stara Zagora is situated in southern Bulgaria, surrounded by the vast fields
of the Upper Thracian Lowland and parts of the Sarnena Sredna Gora Mountains. It
is one of the biggest towns in the country, with a population of 150,000
inhabitants.
It serves as a central connection of the Bulgarian railway
network, and an important crossroads between the East and the West, the North
and the South.
City of straight streets, lime trees and poets. The town is
commonly known as the “town of lime-trees and
poets”. It is the birthplace of the writers Georgi Bakalov,
Kiril Hristov, Dimitar Podvarzachov, Nikolai Liliev, Veselin Hanchev, the famous
opera singer Hristina Morfova, the painters Anton and Georgi Mitovi, Vasil
Kostakiev, Mario Zekov, Atanas Mihov and Dimitar Gudjenov. The famous poet Geo
Milev lived and worked in Stara Zagora as well.
An 8,000 year old town. The town was founded in the 6th millennium BC. Its long existence was marked
with many names - Beroe, Augusta Trayana, Vereya, Irinopolis, Borouy, Eski
Zagra, Zheleznik, Stara Zagora, and also with many variants of those names. The
first name Beroe is interpreted as "a market town", which was then inhabited by
the Thracian tribe Pirogers. The town was reconstructed and fortified during
Roman rule. It was renamed to Augusta Trayana after Emperor Trajanus. It was
mentioned under that name in Greek and Roman inscriptions, and also on local
bronze coins.
A settlement of the Neolithic age. Remains of two houses from a
settlement of the Neolithic age, dating from the 6th millennium BC, in Stara
Zagora are considered the best preserved from this early time uncovered to date
on the European continent.
